Barnakademin's Blog about Babysitting

When things aren’t working with your babysitter – what can you do?

Finding a babysitter who both you and your children feel comfortable with is important. When things work well, your babysitter can become a natural and valued part of your family’s everyday life.

But not every relationship works perfectly from the start. Sometimes it simply takes a little time to get to know each other. Sometimes an open conversation is enough to resolve something that doesn’t feel quite right. And sometimes, changing babysitters may be the best option.

So how can you tell the difference?

Finding a babysitter who both you and your children feel comfortable with is important. When things work well, your babysitter can become a natural and valued part of your family’s everyday life.

But not every relationship works perfectly from the start. Sometimes it simply takes a little time to get to know each other. Sometimes an open conversation is enough to resolve something that doesn’t feel quite right. And sometimes, changing babysitters may be the best option.

So how can you tell the difference?

Give it some time

The first few times with a new babysitter are an adjustment period for everyone — your child, your family and the babysitter.

Your babysitter needs time to understand your family’s routines, your child’s personality and needs, and what matters to you as parents. At the same time, your child may need time to feel comfortable and secure with someone new.

It is completely normal if everything doesn’t fall into place from day one. Your child may be hesitant or upset when you leave, for example, and your babysitter may have more questions at the beginning. That doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong.

What matters is whether things are moving in the right direction and whether communication and trust improve over time.

Is communication working well?

Good communication is one of the most important parts of a successful relationship with your babysitter.

Does your babysitter understand your preferences and instructions? Is it easy to discuss schedules, routines and changes? Do you get the updates you need about how things went with your child?

Small misunderstandings can happen, especially at the beginning. They can often be resolved simply by talking openly and being clear about what you need.

However, if communication continues to be difficult even after you have tried to address the issue, it may be a sign that the match isn’t quite right.

How does your child feel about the babysitter?

Your child’s sense of comfort and security is, of course, essential.

That doesn’t mean your child needs to be delighted every time the babysitter arrives. Younger children in particular may need time to adjust to a new person and to being away from their parents.

Instead, look at how the relationship develops over time. Does your child seem increasingly relaxed around the babysitter? Do they interact with her and seem comfortable in her care? Is the babysitter attentive to your child’s signals, needs and personality?

A good relationship often develops gradually.

However, if your child continues to seem noticeably uncomfortable or uneasy over a longer period of time, or if you as parents feel that the relationship isn’t developing well, it is important to take those concerns seriously.

Is your babysitter reliable?

For many families, babysitting is an important part of their weekly routine. You need to be able to rely on the times and arrangements you have agreed on.

Of course, anyone can be late or need to change plans occasionally. What matters is how your babysitter communicates when something unexpected happens.

If your babysitter is regularly late, cancels at short notice or is difficult to reach, however, it can cause problems for the whole family’s schedule. In that case, it is something worth addressing.

Is your babysitter attentive and engaged?

Children’s needs change over time, and a good babysitter should be able to adapt to both your child and your family.

This doesn’t mean that every babysitting session needs to include a new or creative activity. What matters is that your babysitter is present, attentive and engaged, and that she can adapt activities and routines to your child’s age, personality, mood and energy levels.

If you notice a clear change in her level of engagement, or feel that she is no longer responding to your child’s or family’s needs, it is worth talking about.

Talk about it first — when appropriate

Many smaller issues can be resolved through a simple, open conversation.

If the issue involves routines, activities, communication or different expectations, it can be helpful to speak directly with your babysitter and explain what you would like to change.

Try to be specific. Rather than simply saying that something “isn’t working”, explain what you would like to see more or less of. This makes it easier for your babysitter to understand your expectations and make adjustments.

And you don’t need to wait until a small concern becomes a bigger problem. It is often much easier to address things early.

When might it be time to change babysitters?

Sometimes a match simply doesn’t work out, even when both the family and the babysitter have done their best.

If you have given the relationship a reasonable amount of time, clearly communicated your needs and tried to resolve the issues that have come up, but still feel that the arrangement isn’t working, it may be worth considering a different babysitter.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that anyone has done something wrong. Every family and every babysitter is different, and sometimes another person is simply a better fit.

The most important thing is that both you and your child feel comfortable and secure with the babysitting arrangement.
